FAQ - Developer Accounts - Updated 5/30/02

Developer Account Specifics:

Developer Account Differences for Web Development - The account is configured with two major differences from the Basic account.   1) Access to the IFS and  2) A personal web site hosted by the AS/400 HTTP Server.

IFS Folder Information- Your account will have a folder on the IFS with the same name as your user profile.  (Example: /home/userid)  You can view it from a green screen by using the WRKLNK command.  You will find a subfolder named www.  (Example: /home/userid/www)  This is the place that the HTTP server looks to present your web pages.

For your personal web site to function properly we must authorize the server to  use certain objects within the IFS for your account.  There are 2 HTTP server user profiles (QTMHHTTP / QTMHHTP1).  These profiles have been defined in group profile HTTP on our systems.  We must give authority to both of these profiles for the HTTP server to work.

You will notice all objects within the IFS for your account will have these profiles authorized to them.  This allows the public to view the pages through the internet.  IF you are not planning on using the personal web site you can remove the authority to group profile HTTP from all IFS folders and objects and secure your folder from the public.

Index Page - Your personal web site is served by the iSeries HTTP server.  It is configured to look for an index or welcome page in the web folder in your home directory on the IFS for one of the following files: index.htm, index.html, index.xml or welcome.html.  If it finds one of these files it will serve it automatically.

URL of your personal web site - The  URL of your website is a combination of our domain name and your user id.  Example: www.virtual400.net/~userid Note that the ~ is necessary to tell the server to look for your index page in your home directory.

Updating the web site - You must update the files in the IFS to change your personal website.  To do this you would upload or FTP the changes to your home directory.  As soon as the pages are created or updated within your home directory the server will find them and serve them over the internet.
